An introduction:

Hello,

I’m Sam Weeks - a Birmingham-based abstract painter of ideas rather than things. I create layered works inspired by the ways we make sense of ourselves and the world around us.
My art invites curiosity, reflection and personal interpretation.

I exhibit regularly in solo and group exhibitions, and I’m also a member of ‘In Full Flow’ - a collective of four women painters whose distinctive individual practices are united by a shared belief in painting as a way to connect, release and reveal.

If you’d like to email me, or connect with me on Instagram or Facebook, click the links at the bottom of the page - I’d love to hear from you.

A deeper perspective:

‘Art for Reflection’ isn’t just a fancy tagline, it’s an intention…

On a postcard pinned to Sam Weeks’ studio wall, is the mantra -

‘My actions are blissfully free from attachment to outcome.’

Paired with her habit of “noticing what I notice” and you have the
essence of Weeks’ creative practice - the journey and process of
painting have equal importance to the finished artwork.

Weeks’ abstract paintings blend playful curiosity with quiet restraint,
inviting you to pause, clear mental space and engage - emotionally,
instinctively, rationally; they open a conversation and ask you to reflect
and respond.

With nods to geometric and mystical abstraction, Weeks’ work is underlined by her research into psychology, philosophy and symbolism, and given the freedom to play with the ideas it uncovers, while her process allows intention and instinct to vie for control.

Weeks’ paintings are multi-layered – both physically, and in the ideas they communicate. Through unrestrained mark making interwoven with intentionally drawn straight lines, grids, circles, and patterns, Weeks’ paintings endeavour to analyse and respond to being human - she asserts the rules and then interrupts them.

Weeks paints with no predetermined outcome in mind - she embraces an openness to let the work unfold on its own terms. This necessitates dialling down the conscious mind and giving way to a flow state where the subconscious can find new territory. The resulting work feels simultaneously playful and contemplative, holding a delicate balance of control and letting go.
